AI Overviews

AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google places at the top of many search results, answering the query directly above the traditional list of links.

AI Overviews are Google's machine-written answer box: when you search, an AI reads across many sources and composes a paragraph or two right at the top, often with a few cited links. They are no longer a fringe experiment. About 58% that produced an AI-generated summary, so for a large share of the people looking for a place to eat, the AI answer is the first thing they see.

The consequence for restaurants is a shift in where attention lands. When an AI Overview appears, users click a traditional search result far less often: 8% vs 15%, and they click a link inside the summary only about 1% of the time. In practice that means the summary itself, and whether it names or recommends you, increasingly is the result. Being the source the overview pulls from, or the restaurant it mentions, matters more than ranking fourth on a page few people scroll to.

Winning here is the same underlying work as Generative engine optimization (GEO) and Local SEO: accurate, structured, well-reviewed information that a model can trust and quote. Clean Schema markup, consistent listings (see NAP consistency), and a healthy review profile are what make your restaurant quotable to the machine writing the answer.
