Cloud POS

A cloud POS is a point-of-sale whose software and data live on remote servers reached over the internet, rather than on a computer locked inside the restaurant.

A cloud (or web-based) point-of-sale runs its brains in the cloud instead of on a back-office server in the building. The terminals, tablets, and handheld POS devices on the floor are windows into software and data hosted remotely and synced over the internet. That is the break from legacy on-premise systems, where the software and the database sat on a single machine you had to be on-site to touch. Modern restaurant platforms are overwhelmingly cloud-based: Toast, one of the largest, runs across roughly 156,000 locations.

The cloud model is what makes the rest of modern restaurant tech possible. Because the data lives in one connected place, an owner can pull real-time sales from a phone at home, updates and new features arrive automatically, and, most important, the system exposes an API so online ordering, delivery, accounting, loyalty, and reservations all read and write the same source of truth. Legacy on-premise systems could not do that easily, which is why price changes and multi-location reporting used to be painful. The trade-off is a dependence on connectivity, so a good cloud POS keeps an offline mode that still captures cards when the internet drops.

A cloud POS is the foundation AI features are built on, because they need live, connected data: demand forecasting reads its sales history, inventory tools read its item-level sales, and marketing tools read its guest and order records. The major platforms (Toast, Square for Restaurants, Lightspeed Restaurant, TouchBistro, SpotOn) are all cloud-native, and Toast alone processed $51.5 billion GPV in a recent year.
