Waitlist

A waitlist is the ordered queue of walk-in guests waiting for a table, now usually run digitally so parties can be quoted an honest wait and texted the moment their table is ready.

A waitlist is how a full room sequences the guests who arrive hoping for a table it does not have open yet. It used to be a name on a clipboard and a buzzer, and is now typically a digital list that captures party size and a mobile number, quotes a wait, and sends a text when the table is ready so guests can wait nearby instead of crowding the host stand. It is the complement to reservations: bookings pace the demand you know is coming, the waitlist handles the Walk-in demand that shows up unannounced.

A well-run waitlist protects both covers and the mood of the room. An honest quoted wait keeps parties from giving up and leaving, and freeing them to step away (a text brings them back) makes the wait feel shorter, which matters because nearly half of Americans prefer restaurant texts for time-sensitive updates like a table-ready alert. Texting works as the channel because 81% have opted in to business texts. A sloppy waitlist that over-promises the wait or loses the running order turns willing guests into walkaways, the same lost Covers a No-show costs you.

Digital waitlist and guest-management systems (Yelp Guest Manager, SevenRooms, OpenTable, Eat App) run the queue on their own: they quote data-backed waits, fire the ready text, and roll a freed table straight to the next party in line. Paired with a voice agent that answers the phone during a rush, they capture demand that would otherwise never reach the floor, with one vendor reporting up to 50% more phone covers.
