Drive-thru AI
Drive-thru AI is voice AI applied to the drive-thru lane, taking a guest's spoken order at the speaker and sending it to the kitchen without a staff member on the headset.
Drive-thru AI is the ordering-lane cousin of Voice AI: a system that listens to the guest at the speaker box, understands the order (including modifications and combos), suggests add-ons, and fires the ticket to the kitchen. The goal is to free a staff member from the headset to expedite and run food, keep line speed up, and make upsell prompts consistent, since 94%, and off-premises is now ~75% of restaurant traffic.
Adoption at scale is real: Taco Bell has deployed voice AI to 890+ Taco Bell locations across 38 states, Wendy's FreshAI is expanding from 160 to 500+ locations, and Dairy Queen rolled out Presto across 25+ states/provinces. On upselling specifically, drive-thru voice AI makes about 4x more context-specific upsell attempts than staff, and up to +6% revenue. Vendors here include Presto Automation, SoundHound AI (for Restaurants), ConverseNow, and Hi Auto.
Be clear-eyed about the honest limits. This is production-grade but still supervised: employees intervened in 22% employee intervention rate in one mystery-shopper study, and McDonald's 2.5-year test ended with a partner. For most independents without a drive-thru, this is context rather than a to-do, but the same underlying voice technology is immediately useful on the phone. See Voice AI and AI phone answering.
