Voice AI

Voice AI is software that answers phone calls or drive-thru orders in a natural spoken conversation, understanding what a caller wants and responding without a human on the line.

Voice AI combines speech recognition, a Large language model (LLM) to understand and decide, and synthetic speech into a system that can hold a real conversation by phone or at a drive-thru speaker. For a restaurant it most often means an agent that answers the phone: taking a reservation, quoting hours, answering "do you have gluten-free," or capturing a to-go order, at any hour and on every simultaneous call, without pulling a host off the floor.

The pain it targets is concrete. Roughly 40% unanswered / $20B lost annually, and every missed call is a booking, an order, or a regular lost to the ringing. Vendors report meaningful recovery: Slang.ai says restaurants drive Up to 50% more phone covers / 96%+ satisfaction using its voice agent, at published pricing of $399-$599 per location per location. Others in the space include Loman AI, ConverseNow, SoundHound AI (for Restaurants), and Hi Auto. This is not science fiction anymore, but it is worth being honest that it is supervised technology: in a mystery-shopper study of drive-thru voice AI, 22% employee intervention rate, and even McDonald's 2.5-year test ended. It handles the routine reliably and still needs a human for the edge cases.

For an independent operator the calculus is usually simplest on the phone, where the alternative is a call going unanswered entirely. See AI phone answering and AI reservations for how this maps to front-of-house work, and Drive-thru AI for the ordering-lane version.
