Prompt

A prompt is the instruction or question you give an AI model, and how it is worded largely determines the quality and usefulness of what comes back.

Everything you type into ChatGPT or an AI feature is a prompt: the request itself, plus any context, examples, and rules you include. Because a Large language model (LLM) produces its answer by continuing from what you gave it, the prompt is the single biggest lever on the result. Vague in, vague out; specific in, useful out.

It matters to an operator in two ways. First, when you use AI directly (drafting a menu description, a reply to a review, a social caption), a prompt that carries your voice, the actual dish, and your constraints beats "write me a caption" every time. Second, inside the tools you buy, a hidden system prompt is what makes a phone agent (Voice AI) sound like your restaurant and follow your policies. Since operators still lean on AI mostly for lower-risk tasks (19%/15% marketing, 10% admin, 6% orders), writing a clear prompt is a genuinely practical everyday skill.

The catch is that a model will answer even when it should not. A prompt that fails to supply the real facts invites Hallucination, because the model fills the gap with something plausible. Good prompts give the model the information to work from, or connect it to that data through Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), rather than trusting it to recall your hours or your prices correctly. See review management.
